Rising Above: Meladi’s Journey of Hope
At Phakamani Young Minds Academy, we believe talent and hard work—not financial barriers—should shape a child’s future. Through strategic partnerships like the Student Sponsorship Programme (SSP), we connect high-potential learners with life-changing opportunities.
In Alexandra Township, where challenges often overshadow dreams, 13-year-old Meladi dared to believe in a brighter future. Her mother, a dedicated cook at Sakhimfundo, always reminded her: “Where we come from is not the limit.”
Despite financial struggles, Meladi excelled academically. She joined Sakhimfundo in 2021, receiving extra lessons and a safe space to learn. With resilience and her mother’s support, her grades soared from 78% in Grade 4 to 84% in Grade 7. Beyond academics, she embraced leadership through performing arts and community projects, proving that even in hardship, one can uplift others.
When the opportunity to apply for the Student Sponsorship Programme arose, Phakamani Young Minds Academy identified Meladi as a strong candidate. The selection process was rigorous, but she faced it head-on. Her hard work paid off—she earned a full scholarship to Roedean School, one of South Africa’s top schools, setting her on a path toward her dream of becoming a dermatologist.
“Your story isn’t written by where you start but by how you choose to grow,” says Meladi. Her journey is a testament to the power of determination and support.
To young dreamers: Don’t let circumstances define you. Like Meladi, you have the power to rise above and rewrite your story. At Phakamani Young Minds Academy, we are committed to making success stories like hers the norm, not the exception.
Beyond the Finish Line: How After-School Programmes Shape Futures!
Boipelo Tshipe’s story is a shining example of how after-school programmes can transform lives and inspire hope for young people in South Africa. Her journey, marked by resilience and determination, underscores the power of education and community support to overcome challenges and pave the way for success.
Growing up in Freedom Park, Boipelo was surrounded by the everyday struggles of township life. Her parents worked hard to provide for her, but when her mother lost her job, the family faced financial strain. Despite these hardships, Boipelo remained steadfast in her pursuit of education and her dreams.
Her turning point came when she joined Phakamani Young Minds Academy (PYMA) four years ago. PYMA’s Maths and Science Programme became a lifeline for Boipelo, offering her academic support and mentorship that extended beyond the classroom.
The programme not only helped her improve her grades but also instilled in her a sense of confidence and a broader perspective on life. Boipelo’s dedication bore fruit when she passed Grade 12 with a bachelor’s degree pass, an achievement that only a small percentage of learners in South Africa attain. She has since been accepted to study Biochemistry at the University of Johannesburg—a significant step toward realizing her aspirations.
Reflecting on her journey, Boipelo shares this advice:
“Make the most of the opportunities that PYMA gives you. They don’t just improve your academics; they reshape your entire perspective on life.”
Her words highlight the profound impact that after-school programmes like PYMA can have on young people, particularly those from under-resourced communities.
Boipelo’s success story is not just about personal triumph; it is a testament to the importance of investing in after-school programmes. These initiatives provide critical academic support, mentorship and life skills that help bridge the gap for learners facing systemic inequalities.
Research consistently shows that such programmes reduce dropout rates, improve academic outcomes, and open doors to higher education and meaningful careers.
For young people across South Africa, Boipelo’s journey serves as an inspiration. It demonstrates that with determination, support, and access to opportunities like those offered by PYMA, it is possible to overcome obstacles and achieve greatness. Her story is a call to action for communities, educators, and policymakers to continue supporting after-school programmes as a vital tool for building a brighter future.
Mentorship as a Catalyst for Community Transformation
Wandile Twala grew up in Freedom Park, a community that faces systemic challenges such as youth dropping out of school due to financial instability. But Wandile’s mother worked hard to make sure that he does not suffer the same faith. But however, his father struggled to find a job making it even more hard for the family to keep up with the monthly finances of the household. Despite these difficulties, Wandile believed in his future.
Before joining Phakamani Young Minds Academy (PYMA) in 2023, Wandile’s struggles in mathematics had dropped his confidence and led to self-doubt. His grades suffered, and he doubted his ability to succeed. But PYMA’s structured afterschool programme offered more than just academic support, it provided a safe space with the mentoship programme that was offered to the young minds at PYMA.
Under the guidance of Mr. Mogoba, a dedicated mentor, Wandile gained not just math skills but life-changing tools like time management, goal-setting strategies, and career clarity. PYMA’s peer network of motivated students further fuelled his growth, proving that collective support amplifies individual potential.
In 2024, Wandile achieved a Bachelor’s pass with distinction in Grade 12—a milestone he once deemed impossible.
Now enrolled in Education at Wits University, Wandile aims to replicate the mentorship he received. “PYMA didn’t just fix my grades,” he reflects. “It gave me a purpose. I want to help others escape cycles of doubt, just as Mr. Mogoba helped me.”
Mentorship is not just an act of kindness; it is a way to create lasting change. In South Africa, where many young people face unemployment and struggle with education, programmes like PYMA show how guidance and support can help individuals and communities grow.
